The Soul of Egg Roti

Plain egg roti is a simple Sri Lankan tea time classic soft roti cooked with egg, lightly crisp and gently savoury. Best enjoyed hot with tea and a touch of chilli paste
The egg roti is a humble Sri Lankan tea time favourite, loved for its simplicity, warmth and comforting texture. Made by pouring beaten egg over soft godamba roti and cooking it gently on a hot pan, this everyday dish is commonly found in homes, small cafés and roadside eateries across the island.
Light yet satisfying, plain egg roti carries a gentle savoury flavour with a soft centre and lightly crisp edges. It’s not heavily spiced, allowing the natural richness of egg and roti to shine. Often prepared when hunger strikes in the late afternoon, it pairs perfectly with a cup of hot tea and a simple accompaniment.
Eaten plain or with a spoon of chilli paste, plain egg roti reflects Sri Lankan home cooking at its most honest quick, nourishing and made with what’s on hand.
